Summary of “The Fiftieth Anniversary of the March on Washington” by Barack Obama
On August 28th, 2013, the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, Barack Obama gave a speech at the Lincoln Memorial during the “Let Freedom Ring” ceremony. At the beginning of his speech, he gives an overview of what had happened in 1963. He stated what was going on in that time period, and what Dr. King did to fix what was broken. And how he did so in a way that worked effectively and peacefully.
Dr. King changed the country so significantly that year, and not only for African Americans. He brought attention to many other groups of people that were getting treated poorly a long with African Americans. President Obama goes on to name the many people that changed the course of history forever for everyone. How they risked their lives to make sure that everyone’s guaranteed freedoms were in fact, guaranteed.
President Obama addresses how Dr. King and many others fought to earn their rights in which
they were to be born with. He states that everything Dr. King fought for is slowly depleting away. He
explains how racism is now a big problem within our country and it is effecting our country in a negative
way. To keep Dr. Kings legacy intact we must join together and work together. It is the responsibility of
the people to ruin racism and its not too late to do so.
