The Caped Crusader
One movie that will go down into history for an epic performance in the Batman series “The Dark Knight” trilogy. The series started in 2005 with the premier of “Batman Begins”. As this movie wasn’t a huge hit in the box office, but was still enough success for a sequel. As the complete opposite of the first of the series is, “The Dark Knight” was a huge success winning multiple awards for Heath Ledgers role as the joker and different awards like “Best Achievement in Sound Editing.” Along with the final of the trilogy “The Dark Knight Rises”. Which wasn’t as sensational as the second film, but still had great success.
The “Batman Begins” title pretty much tells what the first of the series is about. This flick gives the story all about how Christian Bales Batman came to be the caped crusader. With the help from his butler Alfred (Michael Caine), Bruce tries to save his town Gotham City from the wraith of his mentor Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson). Bruce adopts the look of a bat to scare criminals becoming the iconic hero ‘Batman’.
As the sequel of the first installment, Batman is back with the help of Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) and district attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) to end the chaos that is caused by the iconic villain of Batman’s, The Joker (Heath Ledger). Knowing all that the Batman represents, Joker uses everything that he believes in against him and force him to make a choice that the Batman will have to live with for the rest of his life.
As the trilogy comes to an epic end, Batman faces his toughest foe yet. The city that has turned its back against him after taking the heat from all of the crimes that Harvey Dent had committed, and the ruthless villain, Bane (Tom Hardy). In the cities darkest hour, Batman assists the failing police force with the help of a few new friends, a con artist Selina (Anne Hathaway) and police officer Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), to end the plans to destroy the city that are set out by Bane.
The first of the critical points of the movies I would like to point out was the atmosphere that director Christopher Nolan was able to provide throughout the movies. Making the city the plot took place in look dull and cold, Paving the city streets with a thick layer of white icy snow in one movie and a cold hard rain in the other. All while making the city appear to be dull with tall gray buildings that stand over the population of Gotham and deep music making the mood of the movie seem like something the villains will come on top and that all is lost. All of these factors come together to make it seem as if all is lost. The cinematography is delivered so very well giving this movie the dramatic feel that it has and needs.
On to the next critical point and maybe the most impressive was the acting of this series. It would almost seem as if the actors of this film were born for their roles. Each main role actor in this trilogy did a wonderful of playing each character making it seem like these events had actually transpired in real life. The actors looked like they were comfortable being in the role they were in. Most notably, Heath Ledgers portrayal of The Joker was nothing but phenomenal gaining him an Oscar and won “The Dark Knight” several other awards because of his efforts as the sadistic criminal mastermind.
The films had quite a large budget. With such a large budget they are able to make things look more realistic and get more impressive gadgets for Batman. For example, in “The Dark Knight Rises”, Batman is being pursued by the police, and just when you think he is caught he flies away in a flying bat-jet. They were able to give Batman gadgets that he would be able to have in the comics. Making this movie like the comics is exactly what the public wants and they did a great job about it remaining true to the comics.
All in all, “The Dark Knight” trilogy is a great dramatic and suspense series. The way Christopher Nolan portrays each character with their dialogue and makes everything hit rock bottom before making them better makes them for perfect those movie goers who like dramas. Finding the actors that can represent each character the way that he did can make a movie more extraordinary, and that’s exactly what he was able to accomplish. There’s a reason why these movies won so many awards. It truly shows what a good director and a high budget film can get you, 2 Oscars along with 2 other nominations, over 300 other award winnings, and even more nominations for other awards.
